CIVIL WAR Antique AMES Model 1840 NCO Sword
American Civil War Dated “1864”
Here we present an antique Civil War U.S. Model 1840 Non-Commissioned Officer Sword, manufactured by the Ames Manufacturing Company in Chicopee, Massachusetts in 1864. The U.S. Army NCO Sword was adopted by the U.S. Army Ordnance Department in 1840. This sword was worn by U.S. Army Non-commissioned Officers and has seen service in many famous campaigns including the Mexican War, the American Civil War and the Spanish American War.
This sword features a straight, fullered blade with a spear point. The hilt is cast brass with a single knucklebow, clamshell guard, and integral quillon. This sword would have primarily suited for thrusting. The base of the blade is marked “US/A.D.K./1864” and the other side is marked “MADE BY/AMES MFGCO/CHICOPEE/MASS”. “A.D.K.” are the inspector’s initials for A.D. King and are also found on the knucklebow. The initials “J.F.” are found on the drag of the scabbard.
The overall condition is near fine. The blade is 38-1/2 inches in length. Blade remains bright. Markings remain clear. Brass hilt has a nice patina. The leather scabbard is fine, still rigid and whole.
