Circa 1920s Spanish “PUERTO SEGURO” Cavalry Sword
Spanish Civil War-era Model 1907
Here we present a Spanish “Puerto Seguro” Model 1907 Cavalry Sword, manufactured in Spain circa the 1920s in Toledo. This cavalry sword was designed almost solely as a thrusting weapon. Spain joined many other militaries of the period in moving away from the curved saber, this just before cavalry charges disappeared altogether. However, the Spanish cavalry were known to have kept their doctrine of cavalry charges into the 1930s, even during the Spanish Civil War. This blade is nicknamed to credit the designer, Captain Luis de Carvajal, Marquis of Puerto-Seguro.
The blade features a single, rectangular fuller. The hilt is very sturdy with a full handguard for protection. Wooden slab handles are fastened securely to the tang by screws. The scabbard is marked “TOLEDO”. The blade is marked “131815” and the other side is marked “ARTILLERIA”. Wrapped around the handle is a yellow portapee.
The overall condition is very good. The 36-inch blade is in very good condition, showing moderate wear. The steel guard, checkered grip and cloth tassel are in very good shape. The scabbard shows moderate wear.
