.22 HORNET Winchester 1885 Low Wall Rifle
With Leupold 2.5x IER Scope & Set Trigger!
Here we present a Winchester 1885 Low Wall Rifle, chambered in .22 Hornet, made circa 1887 in New Haven, Connecticut. Ironically, this was Winchester’s first single shot rifle, the company having been founded on its winning lever action repeater design. John Moses Browning, the famed gun designer who forever changed the firearms landscape, began his career with this rifle in the 19th Century before dominating the world scene in the 20th Century.
This rifle was originally made in 1887 but has been rebarreled to convert it to .22 Hornet. The barrel is fully round and, though it is 23-1/2 inches, the short receiver makes for a very handy package. The scope on top is a Leupold M8 2.5x IER scout type scope on Weaver mounts. The final touch is the single set trigger for a very precise shot. The lower tang is marked “PATENTED OCTOBER 7 1879”. The left side of the breech end of the barrel is marked “.22 HNT”. Sling mounts on the barrel and bottom of the stock. This is a really neat, handy little varminter that would be a pleasure to carry in the field!
The overall condition is near fine. 90% of the finish is intact. The markings are clear and legible. The walnut stock is in good shape. The bore is clear and bright. The action is excellent.
