Description:

Antique US M1873 “ARTILLERY” COLT Revolver in .45

Frame Made in 1874

Here we present an antique Colt Model 1873 Single Action Army Revolver “Artillery Model”. The Artillery or Springfield Armory Model of the SAA is one of the most interesting of the Colt SAAs. This is a revolver that was originally manufactured by Colt in 1874 in Hartford, Connecticut, inspected by the Ordnance Department inspector, shipped and issued to the cavalry. After a period in the service, it was then shipped back to either Colt or Springfield Armory for a complete re-haul to make it serviceable for the field yet again (c.1895-1903). This included cutting the barrel to 5-1/2 inches. Only about 17,000 of these re-armored guns were completed. In all but the rarest variant of the already scarce Artillery Model, the serial numbers will be mixed as various worn out parts were replaced by those of varying number. Many of these saw action in the Spanish-American War and the Philippine-American War and who knows what they had seen before or after that period. They are a fantastic piece of history.

This specimen has the “U.S.” property mark on the black powder frame, below the patent dates. The numbers on the frame, trigger guard, and cylinder match. The back strap is an unnumbered replacement, while the barrel is numbered “6915”. The trigger guard is inspector marked by O.W. Ainsworth with an “A”, while the barrel is marked “J” and “P”. The assembly number on the loading gate matches the one under the trigger guard.

The overall condition is very good. The steel surfaces bear a mild gray patina under a fine layer of old oil. We will let the buyer preserve it as it is or remove it as they desire. The markings are legible. The walnut grips are replacements. The bore is bright and sharp. The action is excellent. Here is a fantastic opportunity to own a Colt with a unique history starting in 1874!

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 5-1/2 inches.
