Handy Pistol Caliber Slide Action Rifle in .32-20!
Here we present an antique Colt Lightning Medium Frame Slide Action Rifle, made in 1894, in Hartford, Connecticut. This was Colt’s entry into the pistol caliber rifle and carbine market, which was absolutely dominated by Winchester at this time. Pistol caliber rifles were instrumental in the hands of those settling the West, as they were able to carry one type of ammunition to feed both their long gun and their sidearm. It also enabled a rifle to be stoked with the maximum number of cartridges, sacrificing power for capacity, useful when outnumbered at close range. The Colt Lightning was successful, but never approached the numbers that Winchester’s lever action was able to achieve.
This specimen is chambered in .32-20. The barrel is 26 inches long and round. The top of the barrel is marked “32 Cal.” and “COLT’S PT.F.A. MFG. CO. HARTFORD CT. U.S.A./PATENTED MAY 29 SEPT 18.83 MAY 26.85 JUNE 15.86 FEB 22.87”.
This specimen is in very good condition. The iron parts bear a gray patina. The markings are clear and legible. The walnut stock shows use and is solid. There is a small, neat graft at the toe of the stock and at the right side of the wrist. The bore is in very good condition with strong rifling. The action is excellent.
