CIVIL WAR Antique SHORTENED Cavalry Saber
U.S. Model 1840
Here we present an antique Cavalry Saber, made circa the 1850s. This saber appears to be a US Model 1840. It must have been broken well short of the tip, then re-profiled for continued use in the field. This would likely have been used by someone in a state militia or perhaps someone fighting for the Confederacy, being short of weaponry and makers. As you will observe, the blade length is about 22-1/2 inches, compared to the 35-1/2 inch blade that it started with. The only portion of the grip remaining is the wood underneath. The blade is dark from years of weathering. The brass guard is also dark with age. The quillon is bent toward the blade. Though it may not have had the reach or cutting ability it once had, it would have been relatively handy to a guerilla of infantryman in that terrible conflict.
