Description:
Griffin & Howe Springfield 1903 30.06
This is a beautiful gun with an  amazing history so here goes from the beginning to present the gun has a serial number of 101  it was customized in the late 20s with a lot of detail  there is a lot of history about the company itself some of their customers were very famous people from President Theodore Roosevelt  Ernest Hemingway Gary Cooper and some famous safari big game hunters Just to name a  few  their rifles were known for the  detailed workmanship beautiful engraving and  accuracy and their reliability    And some of their early rifles were extra special most of their rifles were special order from different customers  but they customized some of rifles for their own  engraved on the barrel the word Griffin Hall and the serial number In my research that I have done I’ve only found one similar to that and that has the serial number 110 and I’m sure they must have used these rifles to show the customers the work they can do and if they wanted to special order some of the things that they could do to their own rifles From 1923 to 1930  they  only customized 840 rifles fast.  Forward  to 1935 businessman sportsman and big game hunter jBruce Allen of Chicago went on a hunting trip to Kodiak  Island in Alaska To hunt for the largest   Carnivorous   Animal   In existence today which is the Kodiak brown bear  so in the hunting expedition there was jBruce Allen  and a photographer and a hunting guide So on this hunting trip Bruce Allen killed the largest bear ever  on kodiak  island  it was a  world record  kodiak  bear  with an amazing shot the bear was running    A cross an open area between the trees  at 350 yards he shot four times and hit the bear twice and then the bear rolled down the side of the hillI in two a little creek bed  this bear measured at 11‘3“ then Bruce Allen  had it mounted  in a life like standing on its hind legs and he donated to the Marshall Fields store in Chicago  where it  was on excibition till the 1950s on the fourth floor which was the sporting good section    where you could purchase all kinds of guns and you could also arrange for your own expedition to Kodiak island through there outfitters  until the 1970s started having all these gun restrictions on gun sales  so for the generosity of Bruce Allen hundreds of thousands or millions of kids  and adults had a chance to view this   Giant  Kodiak bear which I am sure that it  is something that they shall never  Forget  and of course all the people that saw.  It on   display had to tell their friends their family somebody  so imagine over that 20 years or so how many people went in the elevator and push fourth floor button just to get a glimpse of this  huge animal Who said there is no such thing   As  Monsters  And in my pictures. section of this listing there is the full story told by the people that Went on this amazing expedition  it was in the magazine called the Alaskan in 1936 April edition they have it on file in the library in Alaskaand the next thing I learned about the rifle was there was a news show in Chicago in the 80s where they were talking about the Bears in the department store and Bruce  Ellen and  and the rifle   again in my pics picture section of this listing there is Some of  The things they said OnThe news show    my dad took Possession of the   Rifle    About 50 years or  so it has  kind of been in a time capsul talked away  because I’ve never shot it I never remember my dad shooting it or any of my brothers  Who knows maybe last time it was fired it was at that monster  Bear but I’m not sure   after all my research I think  The rifle  and the Bears should be in a museum probably but thanks to the generosity of Mr. Alan and his four  thought of donating it  to Marshall Fields it might have had more visitors then it would of at a museum  so now it is time for some other  Lucky person to have a chance to enjoy this rifle  my dad sure did for many years so if you would like to own  The rifle That shot this world record  kodiak  bear and had smany people get a chance to stand in front of this giant bear and look up.  And I’m sure there are lots and lots of pictures    There’s a lot of guns and a lot of collectors but I don’t think there’s too many that have an amazing history that this one does so give me a call if you are interested or if you want some more pictures the pictures did not come out very good but that’s all I have right now
 Thank you
