RARE ENGRAVED Antique IXL Double Action Revolver
Only 750 Est. Made New York City Circa 1857
Here we present a Rare Antique Engraved IXL Double Action Percussion Pocket Revolver, made circa 1857 in New York City, New York. Only 750 are estimated to have been produced and sold locally. Though the maker is unknown, this revolver bears some resemblance to European double action revolvers of the period. It is double action only and holds 5 shots of .31 caliber ball. It is about the same length as the Colt 1849 Pocket Revolver, but the IXL is much slenderer, making it very handy to carry in a holster or in a pocket. This revolver is equipped with a loading lever, and the flat spring on the left side of the frame is for blocking the hammer for letting the cylinder free-wheel for loading. The top and sides of the frame feature about 65% coverage of scroll engraving. A very clever and unique revolver from New York City!
The overall condition is near fine. The metal surfaces have a light gray patina. The engravings throughout the frame are clear. The bore is in great shape with strong rifling. The original walnut grips are in good condition. The action on this revolver is excellent. Here is a beautiful little rarity for your collection!
