Unique Model 1861 Format Musket w Some Differences
Here we present an antique Eli Whitney Musket with Humpback Lock, made circa 1863 in New Haven, Connecticut. Eli Whitney Jr. carried on his father’s manufacturing business, becoming especially known for his firearms. During the American Civil War the firm contracted for the U.S. government as well as the state of Connecticut to produce both muskets and revolvers.
This example follows the general guidelines for the Union’s longarm of choice, the Model 1861 Rifle-Musket, however it bears several distinct differences. Most obvious is the “hump back” lock. This uniquely shaped lock plate originated with the Maynard tape primer of U.S. Model 1855. This was a priming system that utilized a wheel inside a small compartment within the lock that would feed a paper percussion cap in unison with the hammer being cocked. This system quickly went by the wayside in favor of the more weather resistant metallic caps. This specimen features one of those lock plates that was never milled out for the tape primer and was likely used in order to utilize any remaining stock. Another obvious difference is the iron patch box on the right side of the butt. Finally, this barrel appears to have once been in the standard .58 caliber, but was bored smooth during the period to .63 caliber, likely for use with buck & ball ammunition still commonly used during this time. Overall, a very interesting example.
The overall condition is very good. The metal surfaces bear an even gray patina. The markings are clear. The walnut stock shows honest handling to be expected of a fielded Civil War musket. The bore is smooth and dark with some dust and residue. It will clean up very well if desired. The action is excellent. Here is a unique version of the scarce Whitney Hump Back Musket!
