Budapest in Hungary. The Model 37 was an updated and simplified version of Rudolf Frommer’s earlier blowback design, the Model 29. The Hungarian Army adopted the updated pistol in 1937, and in 1940 joined the Axis Powers. In 1941, the Third Reich contracted with FÉG for 50,000 Model 37s. These were primarily issued to the Luftwaffe, the German Airforce. The German contract variant for the 37M was chambered in 7.65x17 Browning (.32 ACP) and had a manual thumb safety, specifically requested by the Luftwaffe. These were numbered separately from the Hungarian production, as well as marked with German code. By all accounts these were high quality, accurate and reliable. It featured a grip safety, pinky extension on the magazine, a heel release for the magazine, and a lanyard ring. The takedown is very simple and clever. Engage the slide stop on the second slide notch, twist the fixed barrel counter-clockwise about 120° to remove, then simply take the slide off the front. This example is marked “P.Mod.37, Kal. 7,65.” and “jhv/41” on the left side of the slide. A WaffenAmt Eagle can be found on the left side of the slide and the barrel, and the trigger guard is marked “Eagle/WaA56”. The overall condition is near fine. About 85% of the original blue remains intact. The markings are clear and legible. The numbers match with the exception of the magazine, which is “MEXICO” marked. The bore is sharp and shiny. The grips are in great shape. The action on this pistol is excellent. This firearm is classified as a Curio & Relic. Barrel is 3-¾ inches.
