FRENCH Antique MAUBEUGE AN IX “Gendarmerie” Pistol
19th Century Law Enforcement Sidearm
Here we present an antique French AN IX Gendarmerie Percussion Pistol, made at the armory at Maubeuge at the turn of the 19th Century. This pistol was originally made in the flintlock firing system and was given new life in the 1840s by conversion to percussion. This is a relatively small pistol that would have been good for travel on foot as opposed to the massive horse pistols that characterize military pistols of the day. The French Gendarmerie was a national military police force that was spread throughout the country in order to keep promote peace and administer the law especially in rural parts of France. Occasionally, they would also help to suppress rebellions.
This pistol is marked “Manuf. Roy de Maubeuge” on the lock. The top of the barrel tang is marked “M. an 9”. The left side of the stock is marked “9”. Inspection marks abound throughout. Hardware is iron.
The overall condition is very good. The metal surfaces are dark with age. The markings are clear and legible. The walnut stock is in great shape. The bore is in near fine condition, smooth and clean. The action is strong and crisp. Here is a very nice example of a French AN 9 Gendarmerie!
