Bausch & Lomb 7x50 M-17 US Army Binoculars O.D.color Very Good
Bausch & Lomb U.S.Army M-17 7x50 Forward Observer Binoculars, Made in USA. Serial Number 82038 Olive Drab finish. These were used by Forward Observers for both artillery units and mortar companies as the left eye piece has a Forward Observer reticle for calling in range adjustments by clicks. The F.O. usually a 2nd Lieutenant, would observe where the artillery or mortar round hit from his hidden forward position near the front, then radio back “Two Clicks left, One Click up” and the next round, after the adjustment was made, would hit the target.
These are Heavy Duty construciton, high quality (the best the Army could furnish). While vintage for your WWII and Viet Nam military collections, they are still relevant today for bird watching, hunting, hiking or just any general use where bright view binoculars are needed. No case, no strap, but strap keepers are integral to the binocular body. The right eye piece does not have a reticle. The optics are excellent, no scratches, still bright (not cloudy), and all mechanical movements are fully working: the parallax adjustment and both focal knobs. The overall finish shows its age but would still be graded Very Good Plus.
