Antique MERWIN HULBERT Single Action Army Revolver

SCARCE & Desirable Full-Sized Late 1870s Revolver

Here we present an antique Merwin, Hulbert & Co. Large Frame Single Action “Pocket Army” Revolver, made circa the late 1870s in Norwich, Connecticut. These were made by Hopkins & Allen for Merwin, Hulbert & Co. Only several thousand are thought to have been produced. This Pocket Army features 6 shots of .44-40 WCF or, as Merwin & Hulbert put it: “CALIBRE WINCHESTER 1873”. These revolvers are considered today to be some of the best made of the late 19th Century and the Wild West, even better to some than similar Colts and Smith & Wessons, though we all know who stood the test of time. These pistols certainly tended to have different, very well-thought features than their competition, and they were extremely well-made.

One such feature was the method of ejection. Loading was achieved by placing the hammer at half-cock and sliding down the loading gate to single feed cartridges. If one wanted to unload the gun, they could simply push the latch back on the bottom of the gun, twist the barrel and cylinder assembly and pull forward. Only the empty brass would come out as the space created was shorter than a loaded cartridge, enabling the shooter to top of his gun and keep rounds available. An ingenious method was designed to achieve this that included a machined cut on the cylinder axis pin and a ledge on the breech face that kept the cartridge rims underneath. This system was also advantageous for forcefully removing stuck cartridges, providing lots of mechanical advantage.

This specimen features a bird’s head grip with an exposed grip frame at the bottom. This has a finger groove for the little finger and may have doubled as an especially pointed surface with which to bludgeon like the single shot percussion pistols had just 25 years prior. The top of the barrel is marked “MERWIN HULBERT & CO NEW YORK U.S.A. PAT.JAN.24.APR.21.DEC.16.74.AUG.3.75.JULY.11.76.APR.17.77.PAT.MAR.6.77”. The left side of the barrel is marked “THE HOPKINS & ALLEN Manufacturing Co. Norwich, Conn. U.S.A.” The left side of the frame, underneath the cylinder is marked “CALIBRE/WINCHESTER 1873”. The right side of the frame, right underneath the cylinder is marked “MERWIN, HULBERT & CO. N.Y./POCKET ARMY”.

The overall condition is fine. The nickel finish is about 40%. The markings are clear. The serial numbers match. One of the hard rubber grips is black and one a dark reddish brown with speckles, one of them is a replacement. The inside of the black grip is hand-marked “CK 1892”. Grips are in good shape. The bore is clean and well-rifled. The action is excellent, glassy smooth, and still retains that great vacuum seal around the cylinder axis pin. Here is a great example of the fantastic and scarce Merwin Hulbert!
