Description:

CIVIL WAR Antique JOHNSON M1836 Percussion Pistol

Lock Dated “1838” & Clearly Inspector Cartouche

Here we present an antique R. Johnson U.S. Model 1836 Pistol, made in 1838. There were actually two manufacturers of these guns: Asa Waters and Robert Johnson. Combined, the production totals 41,000 guns. This was the last U.S. martial pistol to use the flintlock system, and many consider this the best of all U.S. flint guns due to its craftsmanship and aesthetic appeal. The gun is historically significant as this was the primary issue pistol during the Mexican American War (1846-1848), and was even significantly used during the American Civil War (1861-1865), especially in the percussion converted format, due to arms shortages on both sides. It was used extensively on the Confederate side.

This example was made by Robert Johnson. The ramrod is a captive style to prevent loss on the battlefield. While the primary Federal style of conversion was a “cone” type, in which the nipple was put into the top of the barrel, this piece has a bolster. The lock is marked “U.S./R. JOHNSON/MIDDN CONN/1838”. The bolster has a star-shaped mark. The left side of the barrel is marked “US/LF/P”. The left side of the stock bears very nice inspector markings. “JH” stands for James Harris. There is also a mark of “ORD.”

The overall condition is fine. The metal surfaces are somewhat bright, having been left in the white, with a light patina. The markings are clear and legible. The walnut stock is very nice. The bore is smooth and clean. The action is excellent. Here is a very nice Mexican-American War & Civil War pistol with tons of history!

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 8-1/2 inches.
