Description:

Antique 6-Shot MANHATTAN Pepperbox Revolver

ANTEBELLUM Production Revolver from Norwich, Conn.

Here we present an antique Manhattan 6-Shot Pepperbox Revolver, made circa 1856, prior the American Civil War, in Norwich, Connecticut. Manhattan Fire Arms Co. was founded in 1856 specifically to capitalize on the soon to be expiring Colt patents in 1857. This strategy worked very well for the company and they began by making high quality and very close copies of both Colts and other popular pistols with expired patents. In fact, Manhattan’s copies of Colts were so close that Colt tried to kill their production with a lawsuit, even though their patent had expired.

Manhattan’s revolvers were very well received by the public. The company never received U.S. military contracts, except for a small delivery, most likely on the regimental level. Nevertheless, many Manhattan revolvers found themselves on smoky Civil War battlefields, purchased privately by officers and soldiers, and they were certainly in use at home. The war created a vast and unquenchable market for firearms of all types.

This piece is a scarce example of a Manhattan Pepperbox. The company produced about 2,500 altogether, though in many different variations, including barrel lengths and number of barrels in the cluster. While all of them featured a double action trigger and hammer, most of them also revolved the barrel with a pull of the trigger. They are very similar to Ethan Allen’s from the same period.

The bar hammer is marked “MANHATTAN F.A. MFG. CO./NEW YORK”. The barrel cluster is marked “CAST STEEL”. The frame is engraved.

The overall condition is good. Traces of the original blue remain in the barrel flutes with a solid plum patina making up the balance. The markings are clear. The numbers match, including the grips. The bores are smooth and in good condition. The action is excellent. Here is a great example of a scarce Manhattan Pepperbox!

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 3-3/8inches.

Caliber: .30 Percussion
