This is a solid example of a Remington 1863 contract "Zouave" percussion rifle. The contract to produce these rifles came about because of the destruction of the Harpers Ferry Arsenal in 1861. The US government may have been looking to replace the Model 1841 "Mississippi Rifle" with an improved version combining model 1841 and 1855 rifle features. Approximately 12,000 were produced. The term "Zouave" refers to regiments formed in the beginning of the US Civil War that wore very different uniforms and were often formed having cultural or ethnic sililarities. The reason this type of rifle is called the "Zouave" is not quite clear as many of the rifles saw little service during the war. Overall this rifle is in great shape and would make a fantastic collector piece. Includes bayonet amd scabbard.
