RARE Mule Ear O/U Double Gun by LEFEVER & ELLIS

Beautiful & Interesting New York Combination Gun

Here we present an antique Double Barrel Percussion Long Rifle, made circa the 1860s in Canadaigua, New York. “Uncle” Dan Lefever was a hugely influential in firearms development and manufacture during the 19th Century, being the inventor of the hammerless shotgun among other things. He was born in Hopewell, New York in 1835, and by the age of 16 was apprenticing with John Cutler in Canadaigua, New York. By 1857, he hung out his own shingle for gunmaking, and by 1861, he was partnered with James Ellis, making precision muzzleloading rifles for the New York State Sharpshooters fighting the American Civil War. During this time, they were also known to have made fine combination guns, very practical weapons since an individual might only own one firearm and need it to serve multiple purposes and have more than one shot.

This example features a top barrel that is rifled in .45 caliber, and a bottom barrel that is smooth and .69 caliber for use as a shotgun. The lock is a “mule ear” sidelock with two hammers. Both hammers are operated by the single trigger. If only one hammer is cocked, then only that barrel will fire when the trigger is pulled. When both hammers are cocked, both barrels will fire. The patchbox, butt plate, trigger guard, and ramrod tubes are of brass. It comes with an embossed leather shot pouch, made by “A.M. Flask & Cap Co.” Each side of the pouch features a hunting dog, with one side also being marked “2-1/2/lbs”. The stock has fantastic grain. This would have been an ideal gun for someone on the frontier, being versatile, as well as relatively short and light. This would have been a game-getter and defensive weapon.

Overall condition is fine. The metal is smooth, with a dark patina. The stock is beautifully grained, smooth and in fine condition. There is a small repair just behind the breech that is stable. The top bore has sharp rifling and is shiny. The lower bore is smooth and clean. The action is excellent. Here is a fantastic, rare and unique firearm for your collection.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 28-3/4 inches in length.

Caliber: Top bore is rifled and .44 caliber. Lower bore is smooth and .69

Overall condition as seen in photos.
