Description:
Uberti is well-known for their reproductions of famous firearms from the Old West. The Winchester Model of 1873 is one of the most famous from that period in U.S. history. The 1873 was built around the concept of a rifle being chambered for the same ammunition as the owner’s pistol, usually the .44-40 Winchester cartridge. This feature had multiple advantages not least of which was the owner of the two guns having to carry only round. This also helped to reduce the overall weight of the ammunition carried as well as allowing the owner to carry more rounds, an important consideration when traveling between distant towns with little chance of finding a store to restock on ammo in between. Contrary to popular belief, the original 1873 rifle was never chambered in the .45 Colt. At the time, Winchester refused to chamber their rifle in the cartridge of a competitor, regardless of how popular the round was. This is ironic as the most popular pistol of the Old West, the Colt Peacemaker, was readily available in the .44-40 Winchester. As such, most cattleman, lawmen and others carried a Colt Peacemaker and Winchester 1873 in .44-40 rather than the .45 Colt. In recent times, with the rise in popularity of Cowboy action shooting, new 1873 rifles are available in the .45 Colt. The Uberti rifle shown here is the long-barreled model. It has a 30-inch, octagonal barrel, a magazine tube with 13-round capacity, standard elevator rear sight, wood forearm and buttstock, and a case-hardened finish on the receiver. There is only one form of wear on this firearm and it has to do with the stock. At some point the stock had two small cracks in it and a repair job was performed. The cracks were minor and apparently, were repaired quickly with wood glue. Some small dents are present on the opposite side, likely gained during the repair process. None of them breach the surface of the finish and could easily be steamed out. Other than this singular issue the gun is like new. A rifle like this should be far more accurate than the standard 24-inch model at the same distances. If Hornady’s LeveRevolution ammunition is taken into account, then the accuracy increases out to a greater distance than with standard Cowboy-action loads. This ammunition makes the rifle suitable for deer hunting out to an appreciable distance. A common aftermarket modification for lever action rifles such as the Uberti 1873 is a folding peep rear sight. This setup increases the sight radius of the rifle and the type of sight aperture is more suitable for those with impaired eyesight. The 1873 is a fine rifle and the Uberti replicas are a fine example of this. If you are a lever action fan do not pass up the opportunity to own one of these rifles.
