The Barbar family got its start in England when Louis Barbar, a Huguenot from Poitou, France, fled persecution after the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes by Louis XIV in 1685. Louis (or Lewis) was a gunmaker who became Gentleman Armorer to King George I & II. His son James apprenticed with him and then took over the business in 1741 upon his father’s death. James made flintlock firearms until his death in 1773. This attractive little pistol was made for self-defense inside point-and-shoot distances. The frame and barrel is made entirely of brass. The frame is handsomely engraved throughout. The right side of the lock is marked “LONDON” and “BARBAR” is marked on the left side of the lock. Underneath the barrel has British proof markings and the number “1” marked twice. The overall condition is good. The brass features an even patina. The markings are clear. The walnut stock shows use and remains in solid condition. The bore is smooth and in great shape. The hammer screw is a replacement that protrudes a bit but does not negatively affect function. The action is strong and crisp. Here is a great little brass flintlock with a fascinating family history! Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.
