Cartouched Civ War STARR 1858 DA CAVALRY Revolver
3rd Most Used ACW Revolver, Issued to WESTERN Front
Here we present an antique Star Arms Co. Model 1858 Double Action Army Revolver, made circa 1860 in one of Starr’s factories in Binghamton or Yonkers, New York. Only 23,000 of these were produced, compared to the 156,000 Colt 1860 Armies and 110,000 Remington Armies that were contracted by the Union government for the American Civil War. It was largely issued to those troops on the Western Front.
The design was patented by Eben T. Starr, and it was an interesting one. It was essentially a double action only revolver, but was technically “self-cocking” as the large trigger was only responsible for cocking the hammer and turning the cylinder. When the trigger was pulled it had to make contact with the real trigger and the back of the trigger guard. The cylinder ratchet was also unique. One would think that one-handed, double action shooting would have been well-received, especially by those in the cavalry. However, it was a very different design than troops were used to, and was a little more complex to use than a single action. In fact, a Kentucky Cavalry officer is quoted as saying “The man who sold these pistols to the government and the contract who bought them ought to be hanged as traitors!” That level of hatred for the firearm may have been a bit over the top, but the government listened to such complaints and requested that Starr make a single action version, which he did.
This specimen is in near fine condition. About 25% of the original blue finish can be found mostly on the barrel and top half of the frame. The rest of the metal has a dark patina with areas of oxidation. The markings are clear and legible. The serial numbers match from the frame to the cylinder. The walnut grips are in fine condition and bear the clear military inspector marks of Captain Robert Henry Kirkland Whiteley (RHKW) on the left and John W. Kelly (JWK). The bore and the chambers are clean and in fine condition and the action is excellent.
