ETCH PANEL Antique COLT 1877 “Lightning” Revolver
Double Action .38 Colt Made in 1886
Here we present an antique Etched Panel Colt 1877 Lightning Double Action Revolver, made in 1886. The Model 1877 was Colt’s first venture into double action revolvers, with the Model 1878 following close on its heels. The US military stuck with the Single Action Army for quite some time to come, but the public made these revolvers a success. One famous user, outlaw William “Billy the Kid” Bonney was carrying one when he was shot and killed by Pat Garrett.
The barrel is acid etched “COLT D.A. 38” on the left side. The top of the barrel is marked “COLT’S PT. F.A. MFG. CO./HARTFORD CT. U.S.A.” Patent dates of 1871, 74 and 75 are located on the left side of the frame. The hard rubber grips bear the iconic rampant colt.
The overall condition is near fine. The original nickel finish is about 70%. The markings are clear and legible. The serial numbers match. The hard rubber grips are solid and show good honest smoothing from carry and use on the heel of the right panel. The bore is in good shape with visible rifling and clean surfaces. The action works excellently in double action, with just a bit of hesitation in single action. A very nice Colt!
