The Brown Bess was used in the era of the expansion of the British Empire and was in use for over one hundred years with many incremental changes in its design. This piece appears to be an indigenous copy of a Brown Bess, perhaps from Southeast Asia. The lock is marked with a somewhat primitive version of a royal cipher. The bore is smooth and is a massive .76 caliber. The hardware is made of brass. The overall condition is fair. The metal surfaces are covered in a smooth, dark patina.
