Description:
General Specs: Colt Hartford, Year 1910, .32 ACP
Serial Number: 89802

The Colt Model 1903 Hammerless Pocket Automatic Pistol was designed by John Browning at the same time he was developing an automatic pistol that would eventually be named the Colt 1911 in .45 ACP.  The M1903 was a very popular, well-made pistol, with just over a half million produced between 1903 and 1945 when production was ceased.  Made initially in the .32 ACP caliber, by 1908 the same pistol was released with a .380 ACP chambering as well.  We see quite a few of these pistols for sale on the internet, with minty examples being sold above the $2000 mark.  Not a bad price for a solid steel, early Colt pistol that is still an excellent carry gun in today’s world.  This Colt M1903 sn89802 shipped in 1910 is a very special find, in that it is a FACTORY DOCUMENTED SPECIAL ORDER PISTOL WITH FACTORY 50% COVERAGE ENGRAVING, AN INSCRIPTION IS SPECIFIED, AND IT LEFT THE FACTORY WITH THE MOTHER OF PEARL GRIPS AS NOTED IN THE ACCOMPANYING LETTER.  It may surprise you to know how rare this pistol is, as there are only 600 factory-documented M1903 pistols on record being shipped from the factory compared to the 600,000 total production of the same pistol.  The gun is untouched since it left the factory, with no restoration of any kind.  The tempered blue finish is vivid and covers about 85% of the frame and 50% of the slide.  The niter blue finish is still strong on the trigger and safety lever.  The stampings and lettering are all clear as new.  The rifling is strong and clean, with just a light frosting in the bore.  The factory pearl grips, as noted in the letter, are in excellent condition.  Interesting to note when reviewing the included factory letter is that the factory likely got the inscription wrong, as it states in the letter, and shows on the pistol, to be “JTB”, and the gun is likely a Christmas gift from Mrs. Robinson to John T. Robinson!  The factory employees seemed to have misread the handwriting and failed to notice that the recipient’s initials are actually “JTR”.  I will bet she was ticked off when it was delivered!  All that aside, early Colt pistols with documented factory engraving are rare and continue to go up in price.  The Colt craze is still on a hard upswing, with few factory-engraved, pearl gripped M1903’s to ever come up for sale.  Don’t miss out on this fine little pocket pistol.  Thanks for looking!
