In 1840, James Dougall inherited the family business from his father and older relative, who founded the business in 1760. James made a name for himself making fine weapons, but particularly, he was an early adopter of breech loading shotguns and held many patents for his innovations. He kept shops both in Glasgow and in London. Like his father, Dougall taught his children the trade and they continued the family business after he passed away. This pistol features a brass frame and iron trigger guard and pommel cap that are finely engraved. The pommel includes a percussion cap trap. A belt hook is located on the left side of the gun for ease of carry. The barrel is marked “J.D. DOUGALL GLASGOW”. The lower left side of the barrel is proof marked. The ramrod is captive on a brass holder, which nicely contrasts with the blued barrel. The gently sloping grip is finely checkered with a small silver initial placard. This comes in a case complete with a hand-carved horn powder flask, powder measure, lead ball, and tools. The flask is carved with rudimentary figures of flowers, birds, peacocks, and a dog. There is also a photo of Dougall’s label that would have been found in the cases of his products, emphasizing that he was a “Gun & Rifle Manufacturer BY SPECIAL APPOINTMENT TO THEIR ROYAL HIGHNESSES THE PRICE OF WALES AND THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH”. This .54 caliber pistol would have been purchased for self-defense by someone of the upper middle class. The overall condition is fine. The barrel has been very nicely reblued. The markings and engraving are clear and legible. The grip is in very nice condition with good checkering. The bore is smooth and clean. The action is excellent and crisp. The condition of the case is fine. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 4-3/8 inches. Caliber: .54 Percussion Overall condition as seen in photos.
