Description:

Circa 1800 Antique KETLAND BRASS FLINTLOCK Pistol

Full-Sized English Flintlock Pistol from London

Here we present an antique W. Ketland & Co. Brass Barreled Flintlock Pistol, made circa 1801 in London, England. The Ketland family name became famous in the late 18th and early 19th Centuries for the firearms that bear their name. Thomas Ketland began his trade in the mid-18th Century and his son W. Ketland appears to have begun trading under his own name circa 1800. This pistol would have been part of the armament of a citizen in the early 1800s. It is full-sized and was meant to be worn on the belt.

The lock is marked “W./KETLAND/& Co.” The top of the solid brass barrel is marked “LONDON” and bears London proofs on the left side. Other markings include “S676”, which appears to be a sort of modern serialization from a country where even the flintlocks are registered.

The overall condition is very good plus. The brass has a nice, even patina. The iron of the lock is nice and dark. Markings are clear and legible. The stock shows period wear and is in good condition. One can see a well-executed graft in the wood toward the front of the gun. This graft appears to either be original to the pistol’s construction or it was done during the period of use as the wear is consistent with the rest of the stock. There is a stable hairline from the front lock screw. The bore is smooth and in very good condition. The action is strong, with the cock going into both notches easily. Here is a very nice, full-sized Ketland Flintlock Pistol from the early 1800s!
