Description:
This is a handsome saber that measures 40 3/4" overall, with a 34 1/2" curved, single-edged blade having wide and narrow fullers. The blade has an overall, fairly bright, pewter gray patina throughout with evenly spread areas of mild surface freckling running along the length of the blade on both sides. The ricasso is maker marked on the reverse: “C. ROBY / W. CHLMSFORD, MS"; and “M / U.S. / 1863" on the obverse. The brass hilt with branched guard and Phrygian helmet pommel has an overall dull ochre patina with a few hints of brighter underlying metal along some of the edges, and a ruddy tarnish starting to form. The leather grip is intact, as is the original braided wire wrap, and is in fine condition. The scabbard has an overall mottled dark brown patina with a few minor surface dents along its length. The scabbard fits well, but has no throat chape. This is a very nice, Civil War dated saber that was made by a desirable Massachusetts maker, and rates very good condition overall.
