Description:
SOLD...Honest antique 1873 Winchester 44-40 caliber. Here we have a decent and honest 1873 Winchester. It has the standard 24” round barrel. Caliber is the very sought after 44-40. S/N 217508 and made in 1886. The bore is very nice and above average for an early 73. Shows very strong rifling all the way through with some minor roughness in a few spots. NO deep pits or craters and NO rings or bulges. Just a very nice strong bore on this one. Mechanics are of course excellent. It feeds, fires and ejects perfectly. No bulged fired cases. No backed out primers. Head space is perfect. Still shoots great for a 44-40. I prefer the 38-40 over the 44-40 for shooting. Perfect and positive hammer notches and strong spring throughout. Nothing sloppy or worn out on this gun... The metal has been clean to gray with no finish remaining. Nothing aggressive or filed on but just has been cleaned. No pitting on the gun but just a few pin pricks on the left side plate that do not detract from this ole 73. I just do not know why some people think they have to clean these old guns but just something that was done. There are many out there just like it and I see it so often. Has the original front and rear sights. Has the original dust cover that retracts with the lever throw. The screw heads are still nice and clean and not all burred up from tinkering and all are serviceable. The marking are all very good but the 44 caliber on the brass carrier are worn away as is common on these well used 73's. The wood is good and not abused. The forearm has been cleaned but still fits tight and even with the metal. Shows a little carry wear right in front of the receiver on the bottom and is a bit below the metal in this area. Just shows honest carry wear. NO splits or cracks and only a couple small dings and scratches. The butt stock is good but is a darker color so it has not been cleaned or messed with. Fits tight with no movement and shows a little wear or shrinkage around the upper and lower tangs but nothing bad at all. {see photos}.. A little wear at the toes as is common. NO splits or cracks and is solid.. Still fit even all around and proud in some areas with the metal so it has not been sanded on or messed with. Not much else to say about this one. Just an honest ole 73 with a darn good bore and has not been messed with much at all except the mentioned cleaning of the metal. Reasonably priced for the condition. Would make a nice shooter or entry grade collector. These 44-40's are getting pretty hard to find at reasonable prices anymore, round or octagon barrels.
