Rare GERMAN Schüler “Reform” HARMONICA Pistol C&R
Fine Oddity 4-Shot Conceal Carry Pistol Circa 1914
Here we present a Schüler Reform Pistol, made in Germany, circa 1914. This pistol was designed by August Schüler to be an early 20th Century, concealable self-defense pistol that gave the user 4 shots of .25 ACP. Its action was based on a revolver, with an exposed hammer that could fire in both double and single action mode, as well as having each chamber loaded with a cartridge. The concept was similar to 19th century attempts at repeating firearms called “harmonica” guns, which a series of loaded chambers that would usually cycle from side to side. The Reform Pistol combined the two ideas. Instead of having a revolver’s round cylinder, Schüler flattened it out to, presumably to make it that much more concealable in a vest or pants pocket. As the trigger is pulled, the barrel cluster moves up a chamber, exposing the next primer to the firing pin. The first shot is from the top chamber.
This pistol has another very interesting feature, that is quite thoughtful and unique to this gun. The three lower barrels each have a small port drilled into the barrel above it. As a result, when chambers 2-4 are fired, the gases eject the spent brass from the chamber above it. The brass is prevented from hitting the shooter by the very distinctly shaped hammer. This means that chambers 1-3 have this auto-ejecting feature, while #4 would require manual extraction. Very clever. This pistol also features a manual safety on the left side of the gun. The harmonica style barrel cluster comes all the way out and re-inserts easily.
This unique and rare pistol is marked “REFORM PISTOLE/BREVETE” on the left grip, and “REFORM PISTOLE/D.R.P. 177023” on the right. Brevete means patented, and D.R.P. is a German abbreviation for German Imperial Patent. The number is that of the patent. The same information appears on the barrel cluster, visible through the cutout in the frame. A German “Crown/N” proof is also present on the barrel cluster and the back of the frame on the left side. The bottom of the grip frame bears the serial number. The bottom of the barrel cluster bears the matching serial number.
The overall condition is fine. The original blue finish is 98%. The nitre blue safety lever remains bright. The markings are clear and legible. Serial numbers match. The hard rubber grips are original and very fine. The bores are sharp and clean. The action is excellent and strong. Here is an utterly unique, rare and excellent German pistol!
