CIVIL WAR Antique SPRINGFIELD US 1863 Rifle-Musket
Primary Infantry Weapon Dated “1864”
Here we present an antique Springfield Model 1863 Type II Rifle-Musket, made by Springfield Armory in 1864. The M1863 is representative of the “everyman’s” rifle during the war. About 1.5 million rifle-muskets were made in the U.S., over 800,000 of which were made by the Springfield Armory. This was the last hurrah of the rifle-musket as arms development and tactics rapidly advanced during the short period of the American Civil War. Nevertheless, the 1863 represented new technology as it was made for use with the Minié ball, a hollow based, conical projectile that was small enough to quickly push down the muzzle of a rifled barrel and expanded to create a good gas seal unlike a solid, round ball. Almost immediately after the war, the US military switched from the old muzzle loading type weapons to the newer breech loading rifles, bringing an end to the musket as a standard frontline firearm in American history.
The top of the barrel is marked “1864”. The left side of the barrel is marked “VP”. The tail of the lock is dated “1864” and the front of the lock is marked with a Federal Eagle and “U.S./SPRINGFIELD”. The left side of the stock still bears the government inspector cartouche with the initials “ESA” for Erskine S. Allin. It would be him who would very shortly invent the trapdoor conversion that so many of this musket’s brethren would undergo.
The overall condition is good. The metal surfaces have a light gray patina. The markings are clear and legible. The walnut stock is in nice shape, showing some light handling. The inspector cartouches are faint but visible. The bore is in good shape. The action is excellent.
