Description:

CIVIL WAR Antique STARR 1858 DA Army Revolver

Here we present a fine antique Starr Arms Company Model 1858 Double Action Army Revolver, made circa 1858 in New York. Though not nearly as many of these were made as the Colt 1860s or Remington 1858s, the Starr represents probably the third-most issued revolver during the American Civil War. It would have been used most widely by cavalrymen. It differed tremendously from the other revolvers in its class by being double actioned. The large, curved trigger cocked the hammer and revolved the cylinder, and, at the end of travel, tripped the trigger at the back of the trigger guard, firing the revolver.

Ironically, despite being ahead of its time, the Starr Model 1858 Double Action Revolver was sidelined when the U.S. government asked for a revised single action version for the troops, which culminated in the Starr Model 1863 Single Action Revolver. Eben T. Starr, the inventor, was also responsible for the Starr Cavalry Carbine, which was also purchased by the Union during the war.

This fantastic Starr Double Action Army is marked “STARR. ARMS. Co. NEW. YORK.” on the right side of the frame. The left is marked “STARR’S PATENT JAN. 10. 1858”. The walnut grip is marked on each side with crisp, clear inspector cartouches, each with the initials “RKW” for Captain Robert Henry Kirkland Whiteley. Small, single letter inspection marks are also seen throughout.

The overall condition is near fine. There are traces of original blue finish with a deep brown patina throughout. The markings are clear. The serial numbers match. The walnut grips show period wear and are in good shape, displaying clear cartouches and even 5 notches on the right side. If only this revolver could tell us what those mean. The bore is in very good shape with good rifling. The action is intermittent, but functional. The hand appears to need adjustment. Here is a fantastic Civil War revolver with notches cut into the grip!
