Description:

Antique “COMMON RIFLE” US Model 1817 by N. STARR

Scarce Nathan Starr Contract Model Dated “1824”

Here we present an antique U.S. Model 1817 “Common Rifle” from the Nathan Starr & Sons Contract, made in 1824 in Middletown, Connecticut. This rifle was made as a flintlock rifle. About 38,000 were made. The U.S. Model 1816 became the standard, but the Model 1817 was made during the same period. Many of these were used during the American Civil War, especially in the early days of the conflict when military weapons were hard to come by.

Only about 10,000 were made by Starr. One of its most distinct features is the large iron patchbox in the stock. This musket was updated during the period to the superior percussion firing mechanism, giving it a longer service life. The smooth bore is about .62 caliber with a thick layer of dust. The lock is marked “U.S./N.STARR” and “1824/MIDN CON.” The top of the barrel is dated “1824”. The left side of the barrel is proof marked “US/P/JN”. “JN” is also found on the lower facet of the barrel and the rearmost part of the flat on the stock, opposite the lock. A faint government inspector cartouche is visible there. The top of the butt plate is marked “US”.

The overall condition is good. The metal surfaces are bright with patches of light oxidation. The markings are clear. The walnut stock has been repaired. The bore is coated with dust. The hammer does not currently hold cock.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 36 inches.

Caliber: .62 Percussion
