Description:

“J. CULVER” Marked Half Stock AMERICAN Long Rifle

New York Style Rifle with George Goulcher Lock

Here we present an antique “J. CULVER” Half Stock American Long Rifle, made circa 1840, most likely in New York. This rifle would have made a very nice target or small game rifle. Its bore is .30 caliber. The overall length is fairly short, making a relatively light and handy rifle. The barrel is octagonal with a turned down section at the muzzle for a ball starter. The stock features a nice grain and has gracious curves in the New York style. The right side of the butt stock features a small brass patch box. The trigger guard and butt plate are also of brass. There is a crescent moon inlay on the left side of the butt stock. The fore end cap is pewter. The front sight is fine and windage adjustable in its dovetail. The rear sight is a tang-mounted, very fine aperture that is elevation adjustable. The lock is marked “G. GOULCHER”. This was by George Goulcher, a maker of fine rifle components out of New York City in the early half of the 19th Century. The left side of the barrel is marked “J. CULVER”. The barrel tang and the lock are both nicely engraved.

The overall condition is good. The metal surfaces have a smooth, dark patina. The markings are clear and legible. The stock is in good shape with an old repair at the toe and a small crack at the barrel wedge. The bore is dark and dusty with visible rifling. The action is strong and crisp. The set trigger must be engaged in order for the hammer to stay cocked. Here is a very attractive antique long rifle!
