Look for the gold '55 Chevy road sign! ~Trades and offers are always considered~ Large American Assembled Flintlock Brass Cannon Barrel Ship's Blunderbuss, approx. 3 Ga, mfg. ca. 1720-1740. This attractive and early blunderbuss is a wonderful example of a true working ship's gun from the colonial American era. The original components of the gun were probably Dutch made for export to the colonies. At some point it was re-stocked or otherwise "reassembled" by an American gunsmith. These guns saw hard use aboard ships of war and it was not uncommon for them to be rebuilt from time to time. The heavy brass barrel measures 16 1/2" long and features two large wedding band turnings with a flared cannon barrel muzzle. The inside diameter of the bore is approximately 1.185" or 3 Gauge by American standards with a muzzle flare measuring 1 7/16". The barrel has a beautifully untouched dark mellow color with blackened patina within protected areas. The early banana style lock and iron furniture have a bright silvery/gray appearance. The stock is somewhat crude yet well and effectively made. It features a cheekpiece with a crosshatch checkered wrist. It retains a worn, untouched finish throughout. There is a repaired 4" chip along the toe of the buttstock which utilizes the original piece with a secure old crack visible on both sides above the chip. Otherwise the wood is quite sound with no further damage or repairs. Simple flat iron buttplate and sideplate with brass triggerguard. The forward lock screw passes through the stock ahead of the original hole in the sideplate. Perhaps the lock or sideplate were taken from another gun when it was rebuilt and just didn't quite line up. Original rat tail trigger and iron barrel tang. The ramrod is missing. The hammer pulls back strong and tight but does not hold cock. The frizzen, resurfaced during the period, snaps shut and springs forward securely. Not only is this a great looking blunderbuss but being as early as it is the gun very well could have seen use during the end of the "Golden Age" of piracy, the French & Indian War, or the American Revolution. A fine addition to any collection. Jeremiah Johnson Trading sells antique firearms manufactured prior to 1899 and muzzleloading blackpowder reproductions only.
