Description:
This is a very nice Marlin Ballard, No. 2 sporting rifle in .38 long. This particular rifle was manufactured in 1888 given the SN of 18624.  The barell is a blued tapered octagon, 30" and also bears the same SN under the forearm. The rifling is still strong although the bore exhibits some corrosion. It also has a reversible breech block to allow the firing of rim fire or center fire cartridges.
It has a Marlin factory rear tang mounted vernier peep sight and a hooded front sight with a round aperture. The base for the front sight is loose in the dovetail and shows some marks where a previous owner attempted to adjust for windage.
The butt plate is original.  The stock is plain walnut as is the forearm which is 8" long with a small lip at the end and retained by one screw. The stock has various dents and scratches typical for a gun of this age but has no splits or cracks.
The finish is worn with speckling on the faded bluing on the barrel. The case color hardening is still visible on all sides of the frame.
I have tried to describe this gun as correctly as possible relying on the Marlin and Ballard book by Bill West (2nd edition)
