Description:
Westley Richards 12g Best Quality Plain Finish Hand Detachable Lock shotgun completed in 1922 for Crawford Short & Co. of London.
This model is known colloquially as the "Gold Name" Westley Richards. It was finished as a Best quality gun save for any undo embellishment other than the Maker's name inlaid on the sides of the receiver in gold. The action was case colored and top lever, cover plate and trigger bow were blacked.
The gun has a scroll back and Westley Richards' Patent hinged cover plate and removeable locks, Snap Lever work, Dolls Head extension, automatic "beetle back" safety, single/selective Patent One Trigger, WR ejectors and Deeley/Edge forened latch.
Traces of case color remain on the otherwise unadorned receiver save for the Maker's name inlaid in gold.
Original 28" shoe lump Westley Richards Special Steel barrels have bore diamters of .737" in the right and .739" in the left. The guns barrels are choked as listed in the ledgers "cylinder" in the right barrel and "choke" in the left barrel, they measure .008" and .045" respectively. Original 2 1/2" chambers proofed for 1 1/8 oz. and a raised smooth concave rib marked "Westley Richards 23 Conduit St. London Gunmakers By Appointment To His Majesty George V Rex Et Imp"
Stock has straight hand grip, a 14 5/8" LOP over a Silver's type pad and a polished gold oval and the splinter forend has a horn tip.
Action is a mottled brown color and shows case colors in protected areas. Stock and checkering have been cleaned up and oiled but is crack free and appears original. Ejectors, trigger and safety work well, locks are clean and the barrels are dent and pit free with good wall thickness in both tubes.
Gold Name guns are very cool and very well made guns but finding them in good shape is always a struggle. This is a model very distinctive to those who "know enough to know" and they are highly sought after in this kind of condition.
