Holland & Holland Royal Sidelock Non-Ejector .450 BPE circa 1894. Back action hammerless non-detachable sidelock with extractors, two triggers and a very clever automatic bolted safety. Lock plates and action are covered in period arabesque scroll engraving that is a clear predecessor to the “Royal” house engraving we are familiar with today. The Maker’s name is engraved on the lock plates in a style also of this time period. Cocking indicators are lined in gold, scallop shells are engraved on the fences and the loadings” “Charge 4-Drams” “Case 3 ¼ Inches” is scribed on the bottom of the receiver. “Safe” and “Bolted” are also inlayed in gold.
Original 28” chopper lump fluid steel barrels have full length top rib which has first quarter hand filed from the breaches to the rear sight, remains smooth through the middle and the last quarter of rib is also hand filed up to the front sight. One standing and two folding leaves rear sight and a front sight blade with a brass bead.
Original pistol grip stock with traditional drop points and flat top checkering. The stock has a strap over the comb top tang and an extended trigger tang to the pistol grip’s steel grip cap. The 14 ¼” LOP is measured over a serrated horn butt and the gun has a splinter forend with an Anson push rod.
Barrels remain untouched and original with excellent bores and chambers and appear to have never been refinished and maintain about 25% of the original black. The maker’s name and 98 New Bond St address on the right barrel and "Winners Of All The “Field” Rifle Trials, London" tag line on the left barrel are still sharp. Barrels have a very slight movement when the forend is removed, but the gun tightens up firmly when the forend is attached. Some traces of original case colors on the action. The screws, for the most part, are unmarred and remain timed. The Wonderful period engraving was very well cut and remains sharp over all the action, trigger bow, and grip cap. The stock is sound with no cracks or apparent repairs, only handling marks that are expected on a gun of this vintage. Overall this is a very fine example of a late 19th century Holland Stalking rifle in very good and original condition. Retains a Maker’s case that has been relined. A very accurate, serviceable gun and load data is available.
