Description:
NSN, 40 Bore (approximately .49 Caliber), 31" octagon barrel with a good, lightly pitted bore. This gun was made by William Dixon Cocker of Glasgow (in operation ca. 1836-1846), and was originally built as a sporting rifle with a relatively heavy, swamped octagon barrel. At some point it was bored out smooth, the sights were removed, and the gun was converted into a fowler. The barrel has a full-length under-rib and has an overall plum-brown patina with gray fading at the muzzle and along the edges of the barrel facets, as well as visible twist pattern still remaining on some portions. The gun now has a simple brass bead at the muzzle, the well concealed dovetails for the front and rear sights are still just visible. The gun is fitted with a “COCKER" marked, back-action lock that has attractive scroll engraving, and an overall dark gray-brown patina with dark brown freckling on the tail end of the lockplate. The wrist tang has a filled slot, possibly where a lollipop style sight was once installed, and has matching scrollwork engraving. The wedge-fastened walnut stock has a horn tip, checkered wrist, and a very elaborate engraved, German silver patchbox. The wood has small handling marks and minor blemishes scattered about the added varnish finish, and there is a repair at the hooked buttplate tang at the heel. The belly of the buttstock once had a sling swivel added, and a swivel was also installed on the under-rib which has a transverse hole added just ahead of the second ramrod thimble. The brass-tipped ramrod is original and in very good condition. This is a very nice Scottish fowler, and is in very good plus condition overall. Antique
