Antique AMES U.S. Model 1840 ARTILLERY Saber
Civil War Era Saber
Here we present an antique U.S. Model of 1840 Artillery Saber, made circa 1864. The Model 1840 features a beautifully curved blade with a single knucklebow instead of a basket hilt. The grip is wrapped in leather and braided wire. Faint Ames address on the left side of the ricasso. The right side of the ricasso is marked “U.S./M.M./1864. The initials are for inspector M. Moulton. This saber would have been used in the Mexican-American War, the Indian Wars, and the American Civil War on either side.
Overall condition is very good. Grip wrap remains complete and tight. The blade is semi-bright. The markings are legible. Here is a very nice example of a saber carried by an artilleryman during the American Civil War!
