SCARCE Antique STARR 1818 Contract Cavalry SABER
Dated “1821” & Inspected by Luther Sage
Here we present an antique U.S. Starr 1818 Contract Cavalry Saber, made in 1821 by Starr in Middletown, Connecticut. Only about 10,000 were produced. This cavalry saber is very similar to the 1812 Contract version, which was based on the British Pattern 1796 Dragoon Saber. This saber features a wide, curved blade and a simple stirrup style guard.
The knuckleguard is dated “1821”. The ricasso is marked “US/P/LS/N.STARR”. The inspector’s initials are those of Luther Sage.
The overall condition is very good. The blade length is 32 inches and remains bright. The markings are clear. The iron hilt and scabbard have a dark gray patina. The black leather grip is still very much intact. Here is a great example of a scarce US Saber!
