Description:

SCARCE War of 1812 Contract STARR DRAGOON Saber

Only About 10,000 Made!

Here we present a Nathan Starr Dragoon Model of 1812 Saber, made circa 1813 in Middletown, Connecticut. Nathan Starr was the fledgling United States’ largest sword maker, founded after the Revolutionary War in 1798, making swords for the government. It would not be long before the British were back on America’s shores for the War of 1812, a conflict that would last through 1815. A new contract was made between the US government and Nathan Starr, this time for a pattern of Dragoon saber that was directly influenced by the British Pattern of 1796 being used by the enemy. The contract was only for 10,000 pieces, making these quite scarce. They were immediately distributed to militia regiments just about as fast as they could be made.

This saber has a long, curved blade, measuring 34 inches in length, 1-3/8 in width, and over ¼ inch in black thickness. It is tipped with a clip point. The knuckle guard is a simple iron strap. Guard is marked faintly with “P”. The ricasso is marked “P/OA/N. STARR/US”. Inspector’s initials are Oliver North’s.

The overall condition is good. The iron parts show weathering throughout. The wooden grip is solid. The blade has a gray patina. Markings are clear. The scabbard has protected the blade well, taking the brunt of the years. It is dented in several places with a small crack emanating from one of them. This is a great example of a very scarce US saber from the War of 1812!
