Description:

MEXICAN-AMERICAN WAR Antique Ames 1832 Short Sword

Pre-Mexican War Dated “1842” Gladius

Here we present an Antique Ames U.S. Model 1832 Foot Artillery Sword, manufactured in 1842 in Cabotville, Massachusetts. This short, broad sword harkens all the way back to the Roman gladius, which was revitalized with the French Model 1816 from which this sword was copied. A lot of people will say that, while this was a sword of relatively handy size, it made a better brush hacker than a weapon. If an artillery soldier has gone to his sword in the battle, one would think he could do far worse than a spear pointed short sword with a hefty, cleaving blade. Sure, it does not have the reach or hand protection of a cavalry saber, yet one would suspect that if it was good enough for the Romans, it was a formidable weapon in close quarters.

This Model 1832 features a classically styled cast brass hilt with scale texturing. The pommel features a federal eagle on both sides. The guard bears the inspectors’ initials of “WAT” for Captain William Anderson Thornton. The ricasso is marked “1842/JCB” for inspector John C. Bragg. This four years prior to the outbreak of the Mexican-American War. These swords were used all the way through the American Civil War. Confederate sword makers would also copy this design.

The overall condition is good. The blade is 19 inches in length and bears a dark patina with some weathered patches. The brass hilt has a dark patina. Some of the markings remain legible. For brush clearing or defending life and limb, this sword does it all!
