CIVIL WAR Antique EMERSON & SILVER 1840 NCO Sword
War Dated “1863” from Trenton, NJ
Here we present an antique Emerson & Silver U.S. Model 1840 Non-Commissioned Officers Sword, manufactured in 1863 in Trenton, New Jersey. The Model 1840 NCO was adopted in that year and issued to sergeants as a secondary weapon. It saw use primarily during the Mexican-American War and the American Civil War.
This one is interesting in that the clamshell hand guard has been deleted from the left side. Rough file marks remain in its place. This could have broken off and file down to further the service life of the weapon or perhaps it was a field modification for comfort or preference. It adds an interesting bit of character to the sword either way. The right ricasso is marked “US/DFM/1863”. The left side is marked “EMERSON/&/SILVER/TRENTON/NEW JERSEY”. Initials are those of Dexter F. Mosman.
The overall condition is very good. The blade is 32 inches in length with a light gray patina. The markings are clear. The brass hilt bears a mellow, aged patina.
