ORNATE Antique ARTILLERY Saber w Engraved Blade
Engraved Brass Scabbard
Here we present an Antique Artillery Saber, made circa the 1840s. This saber follows the general design of the US Model 1840 Artillery saber, especially with regards to the hilt, though a bit cruder in execution than anything Ames put together. The sweeping blade is engraved and marked “Warranted”, then filled in with gold. Most of the blade featured a nitre blue finish, which has worn away with use and time. The scabbard is of brass and is very nicely engraved on one side to include floral scroll around each of the mounts and the tip. Small stars make up the rest of the adornment.
The overall condition is good. The blade is 34 inches in length. A dark gray patina pervades. Traces of the gold and blue finish remain. The brass hilt is dark with age.
