Description:
Native American bust, “Hiawatha” is a great example of Victorian era “Cigar Store Indian” busts. The bust is made of chalkware. The bust has “HIAWATHA” inscribed on the front, just above the 6 1/2" square base. Dimensions are 13.0" W x 20.0" H x 11.0" D. This is an old statue. These were made between 1890 and 1920, and were often seen in victorian era homes mostly in the east. I can assure you that this is original of the era. I have been collecting old west items for over 45 years. I have identified at least 7 different variations. Like any antique condition is the important factor. This one is one of the best I have seen. Most seem to have missing pieces, cracks or have been repainted this one has none of these faults. This is very nice with only slight damage.
