Description:

SCARCE Antique WINCHESTER 1886 .38-56 WCF Rifle

RETAILER Marked to “KINDLER” of “SAGINAW” MICHIGAN

Here we present an antique Winchester Model 1886 Lever Action Rifle, made in 1895 in New Haven, Connecticut. The 1886 was a collaboration between John Moses Browning and his brother, Matthew Sandifer Browning, to build a big game rifle to replace the Model 1876. This was Browning’s first repeating rifle design adopted by Winchester, and the design even gained the endorsement of Theodore Roosevelt, formerly a staunch proselyte of the 1876.

This Winchester Model 1886 Rifle is marked by the 19th Century sporting goods retailer Vincent Kindler of Saginaw, Michigan. Kindler was an immigrant from Baden, Prussia in the mid-1800s. He set up shop in 1867 as a gun dealer and gunsmith. The rear of the barrel is marked “KINDLER” and “SAGINAW”. Kindler was This rifle features a 26-inch, fully octagonal barrel chambered in the scarce .38-56 WCF. The top of the barrel is marked “MANUFACTURED BY THE/WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN CONN. U.S.A.” The rear of the barrel is marked “38-56 W.C.F.”.  The tang is marked “MODEL 1886”.

The overall condition is very good. A light gray patina is forming throughout. The markings are clear and legible. The stock is in good shape. The bore is clear with good rifling. The action on this rifle is excellent. Here is a desirable rifle in a scarce caliber with a connection to Saginaw, Michigan during the late-19th Century!

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.
