Description:
SOLD...Very nice and quite rare Colt 1861 Navy conversion to .38 caliber center fire. This is the standard Colt conversion of the 1861 Navy. Only about 2000 ever converted and a lot of those are in rim fire that you can not shoot. This one is center fire and black powder ammo can still be bought today from many ammo makers for the cowboy action shooters. S/N is 4416 Has the standard 7 1/2” barrel. Never cut down or “restored” as many of this model you will find. The gun as you can see has no finish but is not pitted and worn out like most you will find. These early conversions were very hard used guns and most are just not shootable and worn out or you find high condition ones for $5000 !!!! This one is in the middle of the road gun and perfectly shootable. ALL numbers matching. The cylinder number is 62116 but is numbered to match on the rear face with the 4416. This is absolutely 100% correct for these Navy conversions. I have several in my personal collection and they are all just like this one.... See the excellent book written by the late Bruce McDowell for full details on these conversions. Just too much information to type here.. The only thing on this gun that is not original is the ejector rod and head. This is also very common on this model as the original ones were easily broken or bent beyond repair. This one has an aftermarket reproduction but it is perfectly functional. Most people would not even know it was replaced if I did not tell you but I am exact in my descriptions so it is what it is. The ejector housing is correct original and just the rod and head have been replaced. NO alterations have been made to the gun itself. Barrel address shows a little holster wear but readable. Frame PAT. markings are excellent and the percussion era COLT PAT. markings are still very visible from when this gun was made when percussion... Cylinder scene stands at about 75% or so. A little light in places but still very vivid. I can send photos of the complete scene if you want them. This is very important to those of you who know... Hard to find these "no finish" guns with a good cylinder scene. The mechanics are excellent. Crisp and tight as a new gun !!!! Locks up bank vault tight with NO cylinder movement. NO cylinder side to side wobble and very little front to rear movement. Rock solid, like new barrel to frame fit and the wedge. The bore is excellent near mint and is bright and shiny. The chambers are excellent as well. Very common for some reason to find excellent bright bores in these conversions. All of the ones I have are excellent and bright. Screw heads are nice and clean and not all burred up from tinkering. Loading gate is tight and “snappy” and not loose and worn out... Grips are very good with a couple dings and a very small chip right front toe. Some dings on the bottoms as is common on these old west holster revolvers. Grips fit perfectly all around and never sanded on or messed with. The bottom of the trigger guard has a slight bend in it and makes it an oval shape ??? This is very interesting because if the trigger guard is bent, it is usually slightly flattened on the bottom. Almost looks like it was opened up slightly for a person with big fingers or maybe took a hit in the front to open it up a little !!!! Don't know. You figure it out !!! Excellent front sight never filed on or messed with. Just a good condition ole 1861 Colt conversion that has not been abused and not all worn out or with a cut barrel as a lot of them you will find. These were VERY hard used guns and the one of the first cartridge guns used on the frontier. These conversions are one of my favorite cartridge guns of all. Wish I could keep this one, but I can't keep,em all !!!! This is a very rare collectible gun and a excellent shooter with proper black powder ammo. You won't find one any tighter or with an excellent bore than this one. $30 insured shipping. Call 765-728-8049 with any questions or more photos. Thanks for looking and check back often.
