#14030, H. J. Hussey Ltd, 81 New Bond Street, London: A H. J. Hussey 12 Bore Sidelock Model Imperial Ejector that remains in excellent condition, Made about 1905, Made for Mr. J. S. Ames (Boston, Mass.) and remained in the Ames family at least until 1998, 30" dovetail lump barrels at .733 .034 & .039" (Full & Full), 2 3/4" chambers, London proved as a 1 1/4 ounce gun, Wall thickness on the right at .029" & the left at .027", Double triggers Splinter forend with a frontal Anson release, The locks by Chilton and both remain in excellent condition, Stocked to the fences and has a solid receiver bottom, Straight hand stock at 15 x 1 3/8 x 2 3/16" over a very thin checkered hard buttplate, Slight cast-off for the right hand, 7 Lbs. 5 Oz., Very nice wood with excellent black/brown contrast, 95% coverage of very fine Imperial Ejector rose bouquet and scroll engraving that is very well cut, The barrel striking is perfect, 88% barrel blue, It retains absolute original case colors at 90%, It absolutely appears the wood has never been refinished and remains at 88% with handling marks only but is as solid as it was a century ago, The checkering is at 86-88%, The barrels inside & out are excellent plus & totally free of any pits. Every screw lay north & south including the trigger guard, the buttplate and inside the forend. To top off a very nice gun in excellent condition it still rests inside the original oak & leather trunk with original accessories plus 2 each trade labels. The case has "J. S. Ames" embossed on the lid and the stock escutcheon still retains the initials "J.S.A." I have a strong feeling this gun remained in one family for nearly a century. I have seen a fair number of Hussey Imperial grade guns but not as original and as nice as this piece. It has had some very responsible custodians all these years. This is nice stuff and it will be around for another century. As my friend Mr. Wal Winfer would say "We are but temporary custodians of all things on this planet. Treat this old piece gently. Load and shoot it with care. But, above all, preserve its integrity for the future enjoyment of the next temporary custodian."
Henry Joseph Hussey was the assistant manager at Holland & Holland and went on to form the firm of Lang & Hussey on 102 New Bond Street about 1895. He then went on his own at 81 New Bond Street (The address of this gun) and moved to Ryder Street in 1908 and his son H. H. Hussey joined him in 1914 at 88 Jermyn Street and it became Hussey & Hussey. H. J. died in 1918 and in 1919 Claude Harrison joined H. H. and it became Harrison & Hussey. In the 1930's Grant & Lang took over Harrison & Hussey at 7 Bury Street.
