Description:
An exceptional factory original excellent condition and well documented Remington-Lee Model 1882/1885 Deluxe Sporting Rifle in .45-70-500 caliber.

The Remington-Lee bolt action magazine fed rifle was produced from 1879 to aproximately 1910. It was produced in four models, 1879, 1882, 1885, and 1899. Virtually all Remington-Lee production (prior to the introduction of the Model 1899) were military rifles and carbines sold to the US Government and several foreign nations. Remington factory catalogues of the period neither illustrated nor mentioned sporting rifles.

There are presently only two .45-70-500 caliber Model 1882/85 Remington-Lee sporting rifles known, this rifle, serial 23078, and 22938 in the Appel collection sold at , 1989. This rifle is pictured and described in, "THE REMINGTON-LEE RIFLE, by Eugene Myszkowski, Excalibur publications 1994, Chapter 10 Sporting 7 Target Rifles, p 63 - 70, illustrated p 38, p 65.

This rifle, #23078 is also one of a small group of Model 1882 rifles which were upgraded/converted by the Remington factory sometime in 1885/1886 to incorporate bolt and extractor improvements plus the 'Diss' type magazine leading to production of the Model 1885 Remington-Lee. According to Myszkowsky (chapter 6, page 36 of his book)  the rifles were in the #22900 - #23100 serial range and nearly all of these, "Improved Models", would have been for military demonstration in US and foreign military trials of 1886.

Obviously someone at the Remington factory in 1885/86 had at least two sporting rifles of the improved pattern built. The handsome deluxe sporting rifle shown here was most likely a special order piece for a Remington executive and/or a special promotional rifle to garner interest in Remington-Lee sporting rifle production. The rear sight is also special in that its elevation leaf is fitted with a threaded peep sight disc. The front sight is a 'Beach' combination sight, popular in the period.

Whatever their motive 'E. Remington & Sons' created a beautiful and impressive example of the gunmaker's art in this piece.

CONDITION: This rifle is in excellent original condition. Receiver, barrel, triggerguard, rear sight, and magazine retain 97% original blued finish with a few light age/handling marks. The bolt retains its original natural steel surface and the cocking piece has 97% original blue. All screws retain their original blued finish. The buttplate is a pleasing gray with strong traces of its casehardened finish. The bore is excellent as are all mechanical functions. The deluxe walnut stock with ebony forend cap exhibits upper grade Remington checkering on grip and forestock and is excellent retaining 97% original finish with a few light handling marks.

An exceptional, beautiful, and truly rare piece for any public or private collection of Remington arms and/or fine antique American sporting rifles.
