Description:
Offered for your consideration is an affordable, high quality, original condition Maynard Second Model Carbine. The Second Model percussion carbine, produced exclusively in .50 caliber, was patented by Dr. Edward Maynard on December 6, 1859 and manufactured by the Massachusetts Arms Company of Chicopee Falls, Massachusetts. It was put into mass production during 1861-1865, performing well in the hands of troops.
This well preserved specimen is a later production carbine with serial #24698. The total length is 36 7/8”. The round barrel retains a high percentage of the original bluing, and is 20” long with a 5" octangular section at the breech. The bore has been scoped, and is is in excellent condition, mirror bright with no pitting and prominent three-groove rifling. This carbine appears to have been fired very little in the past.
The Second Model Carbine has no wooden fore end, and the black walnut butt stock exhibits the original finish with a corresponding patina which is period correct. The wood to metal fit is excellent. Clearly visible are the two government inspectors cartouches on the left side of the stock. All stampings on the frame are correct, sharp and easy to see, as are the sub-inspectors marks on the metal parts. Fitted with a sling bar and saddle ring on the left side of the frame, the Second Model Carbine has a curved iron butt plate and a folding two-leaf rear sight. The rear sight is fully functional, and there are no marred screws anywhere on the firearm. The receiver retains a high percentage of the original case color, and the hammer retains the original bluing. The receiver/barrel hinge pin is tight with no play in operation when the barrel tips up for loading as the trigger guard lever is lowered. Percussion caps were used to fire a .50 caliber brass cartridge with a perforated base, which was hand extracted. The action is smooth, tight, strong, and fully functional. Based upon the high serial number and fine quality condition, this specimen likely remained in the Federal arsenal, never seeing active duty, and is a well kept and preserved example of a Maynard Second Model Carbine, which was the first metallic cartridge rifle ever produced. If you are a War Between the States buff or are interested in American firearms history, this is an exceptionally high quality and collectible Maynard which is worthy of display.
Included with the carbine is one reproduction brass cartridge case, and the publication, "The Maynard Rifle". This booklet contains virtually everything known about Maynard rifles and carbines including: Dr. Edward Maynard's biographical information; Massachusetts Arms Co. history; Maynard rifle history; inspector's initials, marks, and their names; the accessories that were available; accuracy testing reports of the day; and some stories of Dr. Maynard's adventures with diplomats, military dignitaries, and government officials as he traveled the world selling his rifles.
