Description:
Stephen Grant 16 Bore SxS
SIDELEVER, RARE, MAGNIFICENT, 2 3/4" PROOF

General Specs: Stephen Grant, Year 1903, 16 Gauge, 6lbs 3oz, SxS
Serial Number: 5831

The name Stephen Grant is synonymous with LONDON BEST GUN and has been since his initial involvement as managing partner of the famed Boss & Co. in 1857, then moving on to open his own firm in 1867 that by 1889 was Stephen Grant and Sons.  In the last two decades of the 19th century, Grant’s gunmaking skills were recognized by warrants from the Queen, the Prince of Wales, and other Royal Houses in Europe and abroad.  The firm still lives on today as Atkin Grant and Lang building some of the finest BEST GUNS in the world.  In fact, they have one of the only Stephen Grant 16 Bore Sidelever guns I have ever seen besides the one I now have for sale.  The one they have is a “rebuilt” gun, made to new with the old action and barrels, and is offered for sale at $36,500.  This gun, sn5831 built in 1903, is a treasure extraordinaire and more affordably priced.  We can find Stephen Grant sidelever guns in 12 bore for sale on the internet right now and they are pricey, beautiful guns.  You would be hard pressed to find another 16 bore for sale.  This gun is in excellent condition, with delightful 30” barrels recently proofed (1993) in London for 2 ¾” modern loads and reblacked to perfection, with mirror bores.  The gun weighs 6lbs. 3oz. and balances 3/16” ahead of the hinge pin for that perfect dynamic one expects from a LONDON BEST.  The action is tight, ejectors strong and well timed, the nicely figured stock still has exceptional wood-to-metal-fit and the screws are all in excellent condition.  Choked IC/M, this gun is ready for the upcoming upland bird season and whatever sporting clays events you want to enjoy shooting.  This is one of the English guns that will not be a “hard sell”, as the Stephen Grant Sideopener is a highly sought-after gun and to find one in a 16 bore is just short of a miracle.  The gun is housed on a vintage British trunk style case complete with a vintage makers label.  There is nothing not to like about this gun; it has good shooting dimensions, modern proofs, the most delightful fine English scroll engraving, sculpted fences, beautifully filed bolsters on the bottom of the sidelock frame.  What a gorgeous gun!  Thanks for looking.
